The LMS Beyer Garratts. Realising that the old Midland policy of smaller locomotives sometimes double headed was not the most economical, the directors wanted powerful locos to haul the heavy coal trains. They went to Beyer Peacock of Manchester and ordered an initial 3 in 1927. A further 30 were built in 1930. From 1931, all but the first 2 were fitted with revolving coal bunkers which helped with the coaling of these powerful locos. The class was withdrawn between 1955 and 1958, being replaced by Riddles 9F 2-10-0 class locos.   This model was commissioned by Hattons of Liverpool and was made by Danish company Heljan. Both “tenders” are powered with the boiler sitting on hinge pins so that it has to be lifted up very carefully. I was expecting a nightmare in fitting the DCC decoder, but undoing 2 screws from underneather the boiler and the blanking plug was in sight.
