Swiss Chris Railways

 Trix 3 Rail

My first railway was Trix. Originally mmarketed by Bassette- Lowke with brirish outline designed by Sir Henry Greenly better known for the design of the 15” railways Romney Hythe and Dymchurch and the “Lal Ratty” Ravenglass and Eskdale lines. The models themselves were very crude to start with and were Brirish outline on German Trix Express Chassis. Trix Express was an off shoot of the Nurnburg model makers Bing and featured bakelite base with 3 insulated rails. This meant that you could have almost prototypical running with 2 trains under independent control, unlike Märklin or Hornby Dublo. I had 2 locos, one was a 4-4-0 tender loco in British outline, the other being a German style 2-4-2 tank in German outline with wotking lights and automatic uncoupling. Neither loco exist anymore although I still have the rolling stock and a lot of the track. In the early 1950s the track was changed to a fibre base and later on to a plastic base with a fine centre rail.

I received a Meteor DMU with reversing lights head and tail and a horn. That is still in my collection althought the reversing mechanism no longer works. There was a special control box for that part of the operation still in my posession. The next loco to appear was in 1962 and followed a trip to Switzerland by my parents and was a BLS Ae 4/4 no 255 in Brown. I have another one in 2 rail. The real one was modified in the early 1960s and became part of Ae 8/8 273 which I have as a Roco 2 rail model running with DCC. Since then, I have bought a DB e10, Der Adler, an electric 0-6-0 shunting loco an DB 0-8- Steam loco and a few 2nd hand locos for both AC 16v and DC 12V. The Brirish branch of Trix folded in the early 1970s while the German branch continued under various owners until 1998 when it was bought by Märklin, and now produces only 2 rail locos. On the 60th anniversary of my getting the BLS loco, I bought a brand new Trix BLS loco complete with DCC sound.
