Day 1 and after a sleepless night, I gave up trying to sleep and I was caway by 3.30 AM. The M25 was closed at the M11 and so I had to divert via the M11 A13, then another diversion via the M2 because the M20 was closed. Down to the Channel Tunnel and then from France, across to Belgium, a short hop into The Netherlands and down to Heidelberg In Germany. A planned distance of 533 Miles, 858 KM. In reality this became 552 Miles 888 Km
The grey line is the actual route taken, the blue line is the planned route. The pink lines are other days
Although I left home early, I wasn’t early enough to catch an earlier train, but by 8 AM ZET I was in France. Stopping at Brussels for a loo break, then again near Frankfurt. For once I crossed over the Rhine on a ferry at Bopppard, near to where I stayed in 2010 and drove up the East bank stopping again at the Lorelei Rocks
From there on to Heidelberg. I was staying in the old town this year. The problem was that there was no parking at the hotel, and that my room was a good half mile away from the hotel / restaurant. As I didn’t get there til 6, I was quite shattered So I had a couple of drinks and then an early night.
The castle of Heidelberg from the old town. My car was parked in the car park under the the square.
