The Hop Poles Public House, Great Hallingbury

The Sir John Houblon public house is situated at Bedlars Green in the village of Great Hallingbury on the Herts. Essex borders.

It has existed as a hostelry for many years and it is believed that its original name was the Houblon arms. This is because the family of Sir John Houblon owned it for many years. At some point the name was changed to the Hop Poles, hop being the translation of houblon. In 1986 the pub closed for over 18 months and was re-opened under the manager-ship of Peter Cullen with his wife Jean (the Boss) on November 5th 1987.

In 1990 he bought the pub from the brewers Ind Coope and has continued to own it ever since. In April 2009, in honour of the past owner of the estates, he renamed it the Sir John Houblon.
